Velveteen Playboys

In May of 2010 I was invited by a lead singer/ writer/ front man by the name of Paul Souza to join his band, Velveteen Playboys. He told me of his plans to record in June with Grammy Award winning producer Bob St John. I knew Paul from the Boston music scene many years back and knew Bob St John by reputation and so I was interested enough to get together, meet and write a few songs with a view towards recording them. We also worked on sprucing up a few other songs he already had. We routined a few of these with a band he had assembled on a sunday afternoon in late may. Some of the players I knew and had worked with before; bassist Lenny Bradford and sax player Bob Gay. The other guys, Anthony Steele drums, Ben Zecker keys and Mike Null guitar, I met  on the day the above picture was taken, which was one of about two times we got together as some combination of a band prior to recording.

In a handful of writing sessions we managed to get 11 songs almost together and we all went into record them at 9b recording studio in Milford MA. on June 2nd 2010 , with Bob St John at the desk. Other decisions were made as a band in the studio just prior to recording.

By the time we emerged from the studio on saturday June 5th with the basic tracks and most overdubs done for 11 songs, I felt excited and that I would be foolish to hold back now and not join up. Stay tuned. Record to be released by Sept 2010.
